Healthy Homemade Dog Treat Recipe

About the Dog Treat Ingredients

With just two delicious ingredients (flour and pureed fruit or vegetables), this healthy homemade dog treat recipe is sure to be a hit with your pups.

Fruit and Vegetable Options

For the fruit or vegetable portion of this recipe, the ingredient is up to you, but fresh produce is best! This way you’ll avoid any unwanted additives like sodium or high fructose corn syrup commonly found in canned produce.

I prefer using pumpkin, blueberries, or strawberries as they are my pups’ favorites. A dog treat recipe with pumpkin is especially popular around here! These ingredients are good for dogs in moderation, so a bite-sized treat like we’re making in this recipe is the perfect portion!

Pureed Pumpkin and Oat Flour

If making your own puree for this recipe, soften the fruit or veggie by steaming or microwaving them (instead of boiling) so they retain most of their nutrients.

I’ve listed some great fruit and vegetable options below. Choose based on what you have on hand or whichever food your dog enjoys most.

Some ingredients to try in this dog treat recipe include pumpkin, banana, apples, cantaloupe, sweet potato, carrots, peas, or blueberries.

If you’re in a time crunch, you can also use jarred baby food! Just substitute two (4oz) jars of pureed baby food (sweet potato, peas, etc.) for the freshly pureed fruits or vegetables mentioned in the recipe below.

PRO TIP

The only preservative that should be in jarred foods is vitamin D. But if you blend your own, you know exactly what’s in it and don’t have to worry about analyzing ingredients.

Flour Options for Dog Treats

Now that we’ve talked about the first ingredient (fruits or vegetables) for this 2-ingredient recipe, it’s time to cover the second – flour!

White, all-purpose flour is an ingredient many people have readily available in their homes, but it’s definitely not the type of flour I’d recommend for this recipe. We want to give our dogs nutritious foods, and unfortunately, white flour offers no nutritional benefits to us or our pups!

Whole wheat flour is a better option than white flour. For starters, it has more fiber! And a high-fiber diet can help control dogs’ blood sugar levels and prevent constipation.

Some canines are born with or develop an allergy later in life to gluten, a protein found in whole wheat flour. But if that’s the case with your dog, don’t worry – there are lots of other flour options that are gluten-free!

Just know that the different flours react and perform differently when used in baking. For instance, whole wheat flour is more absorbent than other flour, so you won’t need to use as much. And while quinoa flour is an excellent substitution for whole wheat flour, it’s more crumbly in nature, so treats using this ingredient don’t hold together as well.

Regardless of the flour you choose for this 2-ingredient dog treat, they are so simple to make that you’ll always want to have some on hand!

Ingredient Combinations for this Healthy Homemade Dog Treat Recipe

With so many safe human foods for dogs, the options are nearly endless for this 2-ingredient healthy homemade dog treat recipe. Below are some of my favorite ingredient combinations your dog is sure to enjoy!

  • Mashed bananas + almond flour
  • Steamed carrots + brown rice flour
  • Blueberries + oat flour
  • Softened sweet potato + coconut flour
  • Steamed green beans + chickpea flour
  • Boiled apples + amaranth flour

Of our four dogs, only one is a slightly picky eater, and one of them is so food-driven that I swear we could throw him a rock and he would eat it! 😊

Since we always have oats and pumpkin on hand, I prefer using that ingredient combo for this simple dog treat recipe – and the entire pack loves them!

Great for Dogs with Food Allergies

If you’ve read our article on dog food allergies, specifically on chicken allergies in dogs, then you know how important it is to avoid certain foods once you determine what ingredients are causing your dog’s allergies.

This simple, two-ingredient homemade dog treat recipe is easy to make and completely customizable for your pet – especially a dog with food allergies on a limited or bland diet. You’ll feel better knowing exactly what’s in this easy, safe dog treat recipe, and your pup will love them!

The Process

This healthy homemade dog treat recipe is so simple that they only take about 10 minutes to whip up, plus 20-25 minutes of baking.

Step 1

Once you have your flour and pureed fruit or vegetable measured out, you’ll first want to mix the wet and dry ingredients together to form a soft dough. If necessary, add extra flour or pureed fruit as needed (1 tablespoon at a time).

If you have some fun cookie cutters on hand, be sure to grab those! Otherwise you can just cut your shapes out (when we get to that step) with a knife.

Step 2

Roll the dough out onto a lightly floured surface (using the same flour you chose for the recipe). If you’d rather not use the additional flour, place your dough on a silicone mat with a piece of wax or parchment paper over the top. Then roll out your dough using a rolling pin.

Personally, I just sprinkled the dough with a little extra flour and pressed it our with my hands. Easy peasy!

Step 3

Once the dough is rolled or pressed out to approximately ½” in thickness, use cookie cutters (preferably dog-themed cookie cutters for a fun flare!) to cut out the treats.

If you don’t have cookie cutters, or would prefer simpler shapes, use a pizza cutter or knife to make small squares, rectangles, or triangles.

Step 4

Arrange the treats on a baking sheet and bake them for 20-25 minutes (until golden brown).

Step 5

Make sure to cool the treats completely before serving them to your pup(s). This recipe yields about 24 treats (if using a 3″ cutter). My cookie cutters were a little smaller, so the recipe yielded a few more than that for me.
